Petition to stop the sale of Arrowmont property

Hello everyone- The reason I am writIng is because of a place called Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. This place is an amazing artist community. This place is located in the heart of Gatlinburg, tn. The land that arrowmont has existed on for almost 100 years is owned by Pi Beta Phi sorority. The Pi Phi's have been approached by a buyer for the land. This buy wants to build a water park on that land. This could be the end of Arrowmont. Below is a link to a petition that was started to help save Arrowmont. Please let your voice be heard and show your support for the school. There are many unknowns at the moment and we don't have a lot of answer yet but your voice is very important to the future of the school. Please send this message to everyone you know as we are trying to gather as many signatures as possible before Friday the 22nd. Thank you! The petition only takes a moment and is free. I truly appreciate all you- thank you

Recycled Gas Station

The goal of the International Fiber Collaborative is to provide an opportunity for people who enjoy working with fiber arts, whether professional artists, hobbyists or students, to come together from all over the world to express their concern about the worlds extreme dependency on oil. This year's project is called the World Reclamation Art Project (W.R.A.P.). Participants have crocheted, knitted, stitched, patched, or collaged 3 foot square fiber panels that expresses each participants concern about this topic. Simply by designing and creating these panels and participating in this project they are, in the larger picture, expressing their concern about this important subject to the rest of the world. All the panels have been sewn together to completely cover an abandoned gas station in central New York State.

BASKETS: NO BOUNDARIES, Jane Sauer Gallery

The title of the show, Baskets: No Boundaries, suggests the theme of freedom from rules and constraints, from the limits imposed by traditions and expectations. Over recent decades, basket makers have been expanding the ancient traditions they both honor and now transcend to create their own personal expressions. The 19 artists chosen for this show convey cross-cultural concepts about the contemporary basket movement. Traditional influences represented include Haida, Nantucket, Hispanic, Ojibwa, and Japanese. Tradition and innovation are entwined in all of the baskets.

Some really wonderful works in this show. My favorites are

Dawn Walden,

Jan Hopkins,

JoAnne Russo

but there are lots of great works in this show. Don't miss checking out this site.

Joh Ricci

Really beautiful textile sculptures using knotting as well as other textile techniques.

Statement from the 31st Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show

To create my one-of-a-kind contemporary baskets, my primary method is knotting, while netting, crochet and hand-beadweaving may also be used in combination with one another. Materials consist mostly of hand-dyed nylon cord, as well as, cotton and a variety of novelty yarns. Each piece contains a form that has been carved and sculpted, although I have applied my techniques using homegrown gourds with their shape and size naturally determined.

She won this years Adrianna Farrelli Prize For Excellence In Fiber Art at the show.  See more of her work at 31st Philadelphia Craft Show

Brian Dettmer: Book Autopsies // Centripetal Notion

Brian Dettmer: Book Autopsies // Centripetal Notion

This is the most amazing yet simple concept of altered book arts. Beautiful work if not somewhat painful to see old books cut up. Opens a whole new window into altered books.

Giant Pink Rabbit Found On Italian Hillside

: "knitted a huge pink rabbit and left it lying on a hill in Italy."

If you thought art was just about drawing pictures or maybe looking at old paintings in a big gallery then think again - artists sometimes come up with the most incredible creations in unusual places.
A group of artists called Gelatin have knitted a huge pink rabbit and left it lying on a hill in Italy.

Kate Anderson's Knotted Tea Pots

Kate Anderson
Artist Kate Anderson manages to tie herself up in knots every single day, and if she doesn't, something is definitely wrong. She is one of the few masters of knotting, a craft similar to macrame, but so much more. Her work includes high design, tricks of the eye, and hundreds of hours per piece to create a one-of-a-kind work on a teapot. Kate tells us her immersion into the unusual world of knotting occured when her paint colors all turned brown.

Great article with pictures of Kate’s Teapots in the June/July Home Companion magazine. If you are a member you can read it online. Just go down the page to find the link for the article. There also is a podcast interview with Kate at that same link. Wonderful work and a great artist and person. Check it out.

Fiberart International 2007

Exhibition of Contemporary Fiber Art

produced by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh

Check out this site. The last Fiberart International was in 2004 and was a fabulous show. Images of the winners from the last show are shown on the site.

Submissions from artists around the world reflect a wide range of work related to the fiber medium, including expressions rooted in traditional craft materials, structure, processes and history as well as art that explores unexpected relationships between fiber, painting, sculpture, conceptual and installation art.

Tsuguo Yanai's Fiber Art

Tsuguo Yanai is an award-winning Japanese artist who works in the medium of paper work, or fiber art. Though engaged in a variety of creative endeavours, his main emphasis is on creating installations under the theme of "Matter and Memory."

The common thread in all of his works, from prints to installations, is that they involve working with the medium of fiber, which is the basis of paper.
