A group of artists called Gelatin have knitted a huge pink rabbit and left it lying on a hill in Italy.

Artist Kate Anderson manages to tie herself up in knots every single day, and if she doesn't, something is definitely wrong. She is one of the few masters of knotting, a craft similar to macrame, but so much more. Her work includes high design, tricks of the eye, and hundreds of hours per piece to create a one-of-a-kind work on a teapot. Kate tells us her immersion into the unusual world of knotting occured when her paint colors all turned brown.

Off to teach class at Midwest Basketry Focus

Picture above shows Blue Beak Anteater in process, this is about one-third done. Gives you an idea of the process involved in creating my work. Picture below is the finished work. More pictures can be found at my web.

I am off to teach a couple of classes at the Midwest Basketry Focus. I will put pictures up when I return showing events at the conference.

Tsuguo Yanai's Fiber Art

Tsuguo Yanai is an award-winning Japanese artist who works in the medium of paper work, or fiber art. Though engaged in a variety of creative endeavours, his main emphasis is on creating installations under the theme of "Matter and Memory."

The common thread in all of his works, from prints to installations, is that they involve working with the medium of fiber, which is the basis of paper.

Jiro Yonezawa has some amazing bamboo works that you should not miss if you are in the vicinity of Santa Fe. There are pictures of more of his work at the Thirteen Moons Gallery site.

Baskets from recycled materials.

Fascinating collection of baskets using ordinary recycled materials. I especially like the Hornet's Nest using plastic army men.

The artist ( Elizabeth Morisette, see her Sushi below) has work in two current shows in/near Baltimore, MD. The first is at School 33 Art Center in Baltimore (School33.org) and is called PLETHORA. It will run from March 2 - 30 with an the night of March 2. The second is at the Howard County Arts Center, (http://www.hocoarts.org/) Eliicott City, MD and includes the work of Margi Weir. It will run from March 10-April 21, 2006.

WOW, great site of Swedish Fiber Artists. I can't read most of it but I love the artwork. One of my favorites is Intestinal loop by Ulla West and Syntes 2004 by Britta Carlström. There also is a 12 page pdf catalog of the show, alas in Swedish and not English.

Fiber Art Sweden 2005

Fiber Art was formed1998 as a forum for contemporary textile art. FAS purpose is to create contacts and to circulate information, to work with exhibitions in Sweden and internationaly, to watch over and debate questions conserning the area.

The spring 2006 FAS had 38 members, most of them working in Stockholm.

If you are in the Tempe, Arizona area be sure to check out this fabulous show of contemporary baskets. Includes most of the best known working basketry artists.

Sara and David Lieberman, with their impeccable eye and passion for contemporary craft, have assembled one of the best collections of contemporary baskets in the country. Approximately 75 works will be on exhibit from the more than 150 works in their collection. The baskets are made from traditional, natural materials as well as commercial and often surprising media. Artists range from the regional to the international, and the collection includes both functional and sculptural forms.
